Numerous studies and reports have found that business analysis is a growing field and that organizations are investing more in it than ever before. So it’s not surprising that the IIBA found a growth mindset among the talented professionals in this role. In part two of their three-part 2023 Global State of Business Analysis Report, the IIBA focused on career development and certification, and, based on its findings, Business Analysts (BAs) are not only thriving but are also eager to grow.

From formal recognition of our profession to the increasing importance of certifications, let’s explore some of the IIBA’s key findings on how BAs are navigating their career journeys and preparing for the future.
Formal Recognition in Organizations
One of the most promising findings from the report is that 82% of respondents confirm that business analysis is formally acknowledged within their organizations—a more than 30% increase from the previous report. This is a significant leap, signaling a growing recognition of the value that Business Analysts bring to the table. Whether it’s through better decision-making, improved processes, or more strategic insights, BAs are playing an increasingly central role in driving business success.
This acknowledgment opens doors for career advancement, as organizations continue to recognize the impact of business analysis when it comes to fostering innovation and efficiency. With this heightened recognition, Business Analysts are well-positioned to carve out more clearly defined career paths.
Career Satisfaction and Aspirations: Balancing Growth and Stability
When the IIBA asked about the career satisfaction of Business Analysts, they found an interesting mix of stability and ambition. While 36% of respondents report no immediate plans to change employers, there’s a strong undercurrent of professionals looking for more. Nearly a quarter (23%) plan to switch jobs within 1-2 years, with the primary motivators being higher salaries (25%), more interesting work (20%), and a better work/life balance (18%). Perhaps BAs are leveraging their desired skills and knowledge to find roles that they’re truly happy in; roles that fit their lifestyle or help them meet their financial goals.
The IIBA found a notable gap in defined career paths, with only 33% of respondents saying their employers offer a structured path for growth and skill development—a 7% decrease from last year. While many organizations still invest in training and development, the report shows a slight decline in funding for skill enhancement. This means that it’s up to the individual to find affordable, flexible training that they can do when it’s convenient for them. That’s where we come in! At The BA Guide, we offer a range of courses to help Business Analysts and other professionals enhance their skills and careers.
In terms of career aspirations, Business Analysts are aiming high. The top five desired growth areas include Project Management, Product Ownership, Business Architecture, Product Management, and Consultancy. These areas reflect the broadening scope of the business analysis profession and the increasing demand for cross-functional expertise.
Certification and the Path to Career Advancement
When it comes to career growth, certifications are becoming a critical tool for Business Analysts. According to the IIBA’s report, certification is no longer solely about validating existing skills—it’s about boosting marketability, employability, and earning potential. In fact, 32% of respondents reported experiencing certification benefits within just one month of earning one.
But the advantages don’t stop there. BAs who hold at least one certification earn, on average, 8% more than their non-certified counterparts. Those financial rewards are even more pronounced for those who have earned advanced certifications; CBAP holders earn 19% more, while CCBA holders enjoy a 9% salary boost.
It comes as no surprise then that 95% of respondents recommend certification as a means of career development, with many seeing it as a way to gain confidence, upskill, and stand out in a competitive job market.
Agile Certification and Business Analysis
Agile methodologies have become a cornerstone of modern business analysis, with 76% of BA respondents practicing Agile frameworks in their current roles. Among these professionals, 89% hold an Agile Analysis Certification (IIBA-AAC), underscoring the importance of Agile in today’s fast-paced, iterative environments.
Agile is particularly prevalent in industries such as Banking, IT, and Consulting, where adaptability and quick decision-making are key. As it continues to gain traction, BAs with Agile certifications are better equipped to lead initiatives that require flexibility and collaboration, further cementing their roles as critical players in organizational success.
The Impact of AI: Preparing for the Future
As artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes businesses worldwide, many BAs are optimistic about its potential. According to the report, 63% of respondents expect AI to positively impact their careers, while 31% anticipate a neutral effect. This optimistic outlook reflects the growing awareness that AI will enhance, rather than replace, the Business Analyst role by automating routine tasks and providing deeper data insights.
The rise of AI is also driving the need for advanced skills in business data analytics. Respondents identified problem-solving, communication, creative thinking, and data literacy as the top skills needed to succeed in this new era. As organizations increasingly invest in business data analytics to improve efficiencies and enhance customer experiences, Business Analysts who possess these skills will be in high demand.
The Future is Bright for Business Analysts
The IIBA’s report paints a clear picture: Business Analysts are eager to grow, and the profession is evolving in exciting ways. Whether through formal recognition, career growth opportunities, or certification benefits, BAs are positioning themselves for success.
